Toxic relationships can sometimes be hard to identify. There are some behaviors that clearly cross a line—like any kind of abuse, be it physical, emotional, verbal, or financial. Other signs are subtler—but can be just as problematic.

Selfbrandpal made a list of signs that shows you are in a toxic relationship.

  • 1. All take, no give.

Any relationship in which you experience withdrawals of energy without deposits will leave you in the negative.

  • 2. Feeling drained.

If, instead of feeling happy and productive, you’re always mentally, emotionally, and even physically drained, it’s time to re-evaluate.

  • 3. Jokes” that aren’t really jokes.

If your partner makes belittling comments about you but then claim they were “just joking,” there’s a problem. Emotional bullies not only drop subtle insults, but they often then try to make their victims look stupid or like they’re overreacting.

  • 4. Jealousy and the blame game.

We’re all only human, so jealousy will happen on some level. But, excessive jealousy is never okay. If you don’t have trust in a relationship, you literally have nothing worth holding on to.

  • 5. Avoiding each other.

At the bare minimum, you should be able to tolerate your SO’s presence. If you can’t even bring yourself to be around him or her, you should really just call it quits.

  • 6. There is lack of healthy communication.

You have feelings, too, but the other person won’t hear them. You’re unable to have a two-sided conversation where your opinion is heard, considered and respected. Instead of acknowledging your feelings, they battle with you until they get the last word.

  • 8. Extreme jealousy.

Not just when your eyes stray, although that tends to be a big issue with them, too. These people are jealous of just about everyone. Your friends, family members, pets, anyone who may take some of your time or attention has the potential to evoke jealousy in a toxic partner.
